New Optical Devices Speed The Super Computer

 

 

 

American Daily Science Web,reported on Dec.,22nd: The more powerful super computer,this new device may transmit the light information.


The researchers have developed a new optical devices,with tiny size, a computer chip is enough to install millions of this device. This device can improve the information processing speed and ability, let the super computer become faster, more powerful.


The "passive optical diode" is composed of two tiny silicon rings, the circular object diameter is only 10 microns, it equals about 1/10 of human hair diameter.And different with other optical diode, the "passive optical diode" can spread signals without external energy, and also easy to be integrated into the computer chip.


Associate Prof.JiMingHao who is from the Electronic And Computer Engineering of Purdue University said,This diode can be "Non-interaction transmission",namely unidirectional signal transmission, which can be used to have the information processing capability.


JiMingHao explained: "this one-way transmission is the most basic elements of logic circuit. Therefore, we developed the diodes to realize processing light infromation."


Although cable can be used across continents and across the mass of data transmission, but the information processing becomes slower, transmits data also vulnerable to cyber attacks, because optical signals must be converted into electronic signals for use on the computer, and vice versa.


The researchers said: "this translation takes very expensive equipment. And what you hope to do is to make this kind of optical fiber directly into the computer and without  conversion,on that way, you can get a large bandwidth, and meanwhile protect the security."

 

The researchers FanLi said: "these diodes are very small, and them and some characteristic also very attractive. These diodes may become the parts of photon information processing chip in the future."

 

With this new optical diode is no need of optical-electronic signal conversion, therefore it is possible to increase information processing speed and safety. This device is now close to commercial production. Using this new optical diode will connect multiple processors, and may improve the super computer information processing speed and capacity.


The researchers Leo.wargaze said: "today's lead to super computer limited is one of the major factors in the system, various independent super chips for information transmission speed and bandwidth. We developed this optical diode or can become interconnected communication system of light a component of, and the system may be the bottleneck problems to solve such......."

 

The researcher Leo.Wargaz said:"The one of major factors that lead present super computer running limited is the information transmission speed and bandwidth of the various independent super chips in the system.We developed such optical diode may become a component of the light interconnection communication,and this system may solve such bottleneck problems......."

 

Laser infrared wavelengths with communication issued by optical fiber, and is controlled by microstructure called the "waveguide tube". Infrared will go through the two silicon circular objects orderly, and process the "nonlinear interaction" in the microstructure. According to go into which circular object, beams of light may go forward, or backward dissipation, thus completing one-way transmission. Circular object can also be heated by the "mini heater" to adjust. The heater will change transmission wavelength, so it can process wide range of bands.
